An Automatic Blood Collection Device for Cattle

The IceSampler™ permits remote blood sampling of up to 16 samples to be acquired in jugular catheterized adult cattle.  The system collects the sample (4.5 ml tubes), clears the sampling lines, and infuses saline with heparin to maintain a functional blood collection system – all while the animal is free-ranging within the natural management environment (pasture, feedlot, etc.) without handling. Direct applications include: stress studies, environmental physiology, metabolic studies, or any research application that requires minimal animal handling during sampling.

The easy to use IceController™ software permits timed samples to be acquired at predefined times or intervals using preset commands.  The blood collection chamber is easily exchanged for a new chamber, and the animal can then be returned to the environment for continued remote sampling.  The protective and durable backpack protects the device and is designed to withstand the farm environment.  The addition of ice-packs within the backpack around the device casing provides a cooled environment for sample preservation until sample collection is completed.

IceSampler™ Demonstrations and Training

Remote Animal Monitoring Solutions offers demonstrations of the IceSampler™ at our location in Starkville, MS on an as requested basis (Starkville is 3 hours SE of Memphis, TN; 2 hours N of Jackson, MS; 2.5 hours W of Birmingham, AL; or accessible from anywhere via Golden Triangle Regional (GTR) Airport in Columbus MS – 25 minutes from Starkville, MS).  We also offer scheduled regional demonstrations and workshops which are open to anyone interested in the IceSampler™.

A Motion Sensor for Monitoring Animal Activity Patterns

Initially developed for use in dairy cattle, the IceTag™ is a pedometer which permits moment-by-moment monitoring of activity patterns within the farm management or research environment.  Designed for research, the IceTag™ provides information on stepping activity and lying behavior.  In addition to dairy research applications, the IceTag™ can be adapted for use with other animals such as beef cattle, sheep, goats, etc.

The easy to use IceTag™ Analyzer software permits easy analysis of activity patterns.  The IceTag™ devices are securely fastened to the animal’s leg, and the tough device housing is designed to withstand the farm environment.
